UI settings
User interface settings will have solid defaults along with detailed customization of Ashes of Creation for those who wish to customise their UI.[6][2][13][5]

Gameplay actors, such as foliage density will not be able to be adjusted by players.[33]
- Later stages of game polish will address quality-of-life issues, such as foliage blocking the player's camera.[34]
- We will not allow players to to adjust the density of foliage actors in the world. That will be universal... There are going to be areas that are more dense than others. It's meant to be part of the a part of the world that players can utilize for certain purposes, like hiding in for PvP. However, there will be collision with those foliage actors and the player capsule. So as you might see that bush moving and think, "Huh that's odd. That doesn't look like wind. There must be something there." And that's the immersion that we want.[33] – Steven Sharif
Action bar
Players can build their characters with the active skills they want on their action bar (hotbar).[15][36][16]
- The maximum number of skills a player can have on their action bar will be around 15-20.[37][38]
- There will be an option to include multiple action bars (hotbars) on a player's UI.[14][15][16] For example: One Fighter will be different from another based on what active skills they have chosen.[38]
- Some people like to have a very minimalistic number of hot bars. They don't need necessarily to have three, four, five hot bars that are available; but some people do like that: They want to have all their items listed on their hotbar as well as their abilities, as well as as their mounts, as well as anything that they can essentially interact with as an icon.[14] – Steven Sharif
- Players are not given skills as they level up, they must choose what skills they take.[40]
- There is no spellbook requiring memorization.[41]
There will be multiple hot-bars that you obviously have available, because you're going to have consumables, you're going to have active skills and whatnot. But the number of active skills are not going to overwhelm necessarily the character and be irrelevant especially at certain stages.[15] – Steven Sharif
Combat targeting
Hybrid combat refers to the choice between tab and action combat in Ashes of Creation.[43][45][46][47][48][49] A toggle button (default Z, but can be re-bound to another key) allows the player to switch between action and tab combat modes.[43][50][51][52][53]
- Targeted skills require either a soft or hard locked target.[43][55]
- Soft locking is when the reticle moves over a valid target while in action mode.[54] The targeting plate will appear slightly grayed out to indicate that this is a soft-lock target. If the reticle moves away from the target or the target moves away from the reticle, the target is lost.[55]
- Hard locking is when the player uses right-mouse on a soft-locked target in action mode, or when the player selects a valid target in tab mode. The targeting plate will not be grayed-out to indicate that a hard-lock target is selected. Unlike soft locking, if the target moves out of the reticle, the target is not lost. Tab will still cycle between hard-locked targets in action mode based on proximity priority.[57][55]
- Templated skills allow "blind firing" without a target while in action mode. If an entity moves into the path of the attack they can be struck.[58][43][59][60][55]
- Q: Is the development team moving away from action combat, or is action combat more prevalent with the melee classes, and the healing/range classes are more tab-target other than AoE spells?
- A: We have not moved away from our hybrid approach to the development of Ashes of Creation's combat; and specifically to reiterate: that approach is incorporating elements of skill shots, fast and reactive gameplay that is situationally relevant, and incorporates the camera mode of both tab-targeting as well as action combat reticle. That's something that is still in progress. We haven't moved away from that however. To note, our approach of that hybridization is going to incorporate things like templated skill-shots, directionally relevant activated abilities, along with the ability to dodge to roll projectiles that can impact collision. Those are elements of action combat that are present.[61] – Steven Sharif
Templated and targeted versions of skills will have different characteristics.[62][50][63][64][65]
- Skill progressions, skill point allocation is determined by the player. The player will be able to choose either more tab-target oriented skills or more action-based skills and customize their playable experience to what accommodates their preference. From a balancing standpoint for us developers, we need to make sure that certain abilities house certain functions so that there's a balance between skill shots and tab-target abilities.[64] – Steven Sharif
- Targeted skills will be greyed out if the target is not within a valid range but templated skills will generally require the player to assess the correct range for the skill.[66]
- Different ranks of the same skill can change the skill from tab to action or vice-versa.[67]
- Variables will change based on which version of a skill is chosen.[65]
- It may not be possible to be able to fully spec into just action or tab targeted skills. There might be a 75% cap on choosing skills from any one type.[64]
- For the purposes of balance, certain skill types will be either tab or action oriented skills.[68]
- As an example: Let's say you're playing a ranged class. You could have an action-oriented power shot in your skill tree or you could have a single target power shot that ramps up and does more damage.[65] – Steven Sharif
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse combat targeting
Action combat in Ashes of Creation Apocalypse utilizes a targeting reticle.[71]
- A hot key can be used to toggle reticle mode on and off.[71]
- Left mouse click is used for basic weapon attacks.[72]
- Right mouse click is used as a "focus" button. It can also be used to activate root motion attacks for melee.[72]
- Combat targeting uses hitbox registration in three separate regions: Upper body, lower body and head.[73]
- Certain weapons and skills have ADS (Aim Down Sights) functionality.[74][75]
There will be aim down sights. You may have seen it that you can aim down sights on weapons; and there will be scopes on like crossbows and stuff that - arcane scopes - that you can use.[74] – Steven Sharif
Some spells do have ADS. There's a long-range meteor blast that can be used from one of the spell books; and that has an arcane zoom in. It lets you zoom into a target.[75] – Steven Sharif
Alpha-1 will test hybrid action/tab combat.[63][76]
Headshot mechanics
Headshot mechanics (where there is a specific hitbox for a player's head) are not planned for the Ashes of Creation MMORPG.[77][78][79]
- Headshots were a part of Ashes of Creation Apocalypse battle royale.[79]
- Previously it was stated that headshot mechanics may be implemented in the MMORPG along the lines of a higher critical chance[80][81] and that they would not be one hit kills.[80]
- Headshots in action combat are equivalent to a critical hit in tab targeted combat.[82]
- Players relying on tab skills will have a fixed critical hit chance every time they use an ability or weapon.[82]
- Players using action-based skills are going to rely on getting a head shot or hitting a critical spot on the opponent.[82]
- A Ranger skill called Headshot was introduced leading up to Alpha-2 testing.[83]
Control settings
Players will be able to customize their keyboard control scheme in Ashes of Creation.[85]
- Keybinds were not yet adjustable (in Alpha-1).[86]
- Action targeting can be toggled via a key to enable mouse targeting via a reticle that feels similar to a third-person action game.[86]
- Players will be able to trigger skills with combinations of different keystrokes, and reuse the same keys as part of different combinations.[87]
- Ashes of Creation Apocalypse included hotkey customization.[88]
Macros
The issue with macros is that from an anti cheat metric perspective it's difficult to define what a macro is against a script. And in order to catch all scripts sometimes you have to prevent the macro usage. So really that's a that's a data issue. If we allow for macros then we lose our ability to precisely ban script users, botters.[89] – Steven Sharif
Controller support
The Ashes of Creation MMO is not designed around controller support.[91]
- Ashes of Creation Apocalypse may have controller support.[92]
Controller support will likely be something we work on closer to launch.[93] – Steven Sharif
Camera settings
The aim is to provide a variety of camera options in Ashes of Creation.[94]
- Things will render in the world out of your current vision. While the quality may change between high end and low end systems, and what settings players select, it's important to us to have the game render in an effective manner, that also adds to everyone's immersion while in the game.[95] – Cody Peterson
- Adjustments will be provided for screen shake and other settings that may be nauseating to some users.[21]
- First-person point-of-view may be able to be achieved by zooming the camera, but the game is fundamentally third-person.[74]
- We don't have the first-person zoom in because when you get into first-person there's a different animation set required for the holding of the weapon: The hands that you see in front of you; and we don't have those animations. So we're really focusing on third-person.[74] – Steven Sharif
- Q: What camera distance is Intrepid using for fights? (WoW vs FF14)
- A: Closer to FF14. We want people to have a wide range of view, especially since our battles will be very large. We want people to be able to visually access their surroundings.[97] – Margaret Krohn
The action combat camera is tied to the to the player's targeting reticle.[55][56]
- There will likely be a hotkey that when held down will allow free camera movement in action mode.[56]
- In future the user will have the ability to choose from different reticle appearances.[18]
Later stages of game polish will address quality-of-life issues, such as foliage blocking the player's camera.[34]
- Camera field-of-view (FoV) is customizable.[98]
- Camera mechanics are similar to ArcheAge (hold mouse buttons to move the camera).[99]
Ashes of Creation Apocalypse camera settings
The Ashes of Creation Apocalypse camera is a tied third-person view, over the shoulder, for the purposes of reticle specific zoom options and aim-down-sights. This is solely intended for the current action combat.[100]
The idea behind our hybrid system is going to obviously be customizable from a traditional higher up third-person view that is seen in MMORPGs; and then to have that customizable so that more action-oriented players might be able to come in closer to the character and have more feasibility there.[100] – Steven Sharif

The world of Verra features an in-game viewable world map. This map is not randomly generated, and begins covered in a fog of war.[104] Players will not be able to see the world until they have explored it or gathered information about it. The world is also full of imperfect information, which will require the player to act on it for verification.[105]
- For example, you may hear a rumor in a tavern that tells you the location of a cave full of weak Kobolds, but this was not accurate as the rumor was started by well-equipped bandits in order to waylay overconfident adventurers.[105]
- Information about the world will be presented directly to players through the world map UI as it is gathered.[106][107]
- Node tax rates will be visible on the world map by hovering over a node location on the UI.[108]
- The map UI will potentially incorporate player created location markers that are visible by other party members.[109]
- Previously, detailed information about the world was only available through the Library unique node building.[110]
- Not every server will share the same map, as player decisions will vary between servers.[111][112][107]
- The map will have geographical choke points caused by non-traversable obstacles (such as Mountains).[113][114][115]
- Even though we're an open-world that doesn't mean that from a design perspective, especially with the way our economic systems work, that we will want to create Geographic choke points.[114] – Steven Sharif
- Zones in Ashes of Creation will cater to all levels.[116]
Mini map
There is an in-game minimap and compass user interface in Ashes of Creation.[117][118][119]
- The goal is to allow pings and other forms of communication tools via the mini-map.[120]

Logging out
There will be a logout delay to prevent players from immediately logging out of combat.[212]
Multi-boxing
The current policy on multi-boxing (multi client) is that players are allowed to own multiple accounts, but may not launch multiple game clients from the same computer. Players may not use any software to automate character actions or mimic keystrokes.[213][214]
- This was previously stated to be: If a user has a legitimate account and is not botting or using complex scripting then multi-boxing will be permitted.[215][216][217][218]
Multiple accounts and multi-boxing, that's a little bit difficult for me because it could be conceived as pay-to-win, because you can progress on a second character and you can then gift that progression to your primary character. In that scenario yes I can see the argument. However if the character progresses with the same amount of effort and time needed by the person who's playing and they maintain that progression on that character, then I don't consider it pay-to-win. I consider it a second account. So initially what I'm going to say is having multi-boxing capability will be allowed within Ashes of Creation. There are a few safety nets that I put in place that restrict the ability for abuses that we've seen in other games.[217] – Steven Sharif
Mobile/web application

Farmhands and NPC assistance
Based on node type and progression, players will be able to hire NPCs to work as farmhands on their freehold farms.[219] Players will be able to command these farmhands in-game as well as potentially offline via an application (mobile app) or web interface.[219][220][221]
City hall
Town hall (also called City hall) is a default service building that comes pre-built with nodes.[224][225][226][223]
- Players can interact with the node board to get a list of its citizens.[195] Clicking on a citizen will reveal information about their guild, society, religion, and property ownership.[195]
- Mayors and node governments use city hall to visualize and control activities within their node. These capabilities will also be available via mobile/web interface.[227]

Character page
There is no planned in-game functionality to leave personal notes regarding player characters.[228]
